Backyard gardens are becoming increasingly popular as community members find ways to save money on groceries. University of Maine graduate student, Hannah Pennington, is one of these people. Pennigton lives in a downtown Orono apartment with virtually no backyard space to begin her own garden. However, Pennington said that growing her own produce this summer was crucial. Pennington found a friend who was willing to share a small gardening plot with her. She rode her bicycle at least three times per week from her apartment to the outskirts of town, where she grew an assortment of produce from seed. Since the start of September, Pennington has harvested enough vegetables to produce a Maine winter's worth of salsa, tomato sauce, pickles and pesto.
